It, at some point over the life of your Milgard window, may become necessary to replace the balancer. This article will efficiently guide you through the process of how to replace a balancer. The tools needed for this procedure are a flathead screwdriver, safety glasses, and gloves.
First, you will need to remove the old balancer. To begin, locate the take out clip on either side of the jam. With the sash closed, use your flathead screwdriver to remove the clip at a forty-five-degree angle. Then, remove the clip on the other side of the jam. After the clips are both removed, you need to take out the sash stops at the top corner of the window. Slide the sash up until it disengages. You will know that you are past the engagement point when you see the bottom of the spring loaded balancers. Once you see that, you can slide the sash to one side to remove it. Now, you can remove the old balancer by pushing it down and then sliding it back up. (Since the balancer is spring loaded, you should use caution while removing it.)
It is now time to insert the new balancer into your window. First, place the balancer’s hook into the jam and press down. Since the balancer is spring loaded, there will be resistance when you push down. Push the top portion of the balancer up until the tab is on the outside of the balancer. Once the balancer is in place, you need to reinstall the sash. Put the sash above the bottom of the balancer. Then line up the sash before pushing it in. Make sure there is room on both sides and balance it back and forth until both tops catch. Then slide the sash down an inch or two until no part of the balancer is visible. Reinstall the take out clips and bring the sash down. Finally, reinstall the sash stops to complete the process of replacing a balancer in your Milgard window.
